ABOUT THE SUBJECT

Richard Wain of Penarth was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. Jonathan Hicks will tell the story of his life, set in the context of the expansion of the town of Penarth in the early years of the 20 th century.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER - Jonathan Hicks

Dr Jonathan Hicks is an award-winning historian and novelist. He began his career as an English teacher in 1982 before retiring as the headteacher of St Cyres School in 2019. After three years as an adviser to nine headteachers in Cardiff and Newport, he now currently runs his own property business, writes extensively on the world wars of the last century, enjoys time with his four granddaughters and is one of the organisers of the annual Glastonbarry music festival. From 2012 to 2020 he was an adviser to the Welsh Government on the commemoration of the centenary of the Great War.
